Reflection

What Art III has taught me has been many new techniques and styles of art that I, before, wasn't used to. The class itself has been a marvelous experience as I have been growing in my style of art and have also learn to be more comfortable with other styles. I have seen my work improve much more than when I was just starting in Art I and I hope to see it improve much more even after I stop taking art classes.

Personally, I think my voice has progressed as a result of this class because I feel that I have become much more determined in the way I do my art. Not only that but I have also learned to be even more comfortable with my style of art than I was before. My artwork has become better in this year than it was in the two previous years. I have learned to be comfortable with multifigure composition works and also the use of multimedia works. Although I'm still not good at painting, as it is seen in the triptych, I feel I have become more used to it and that now it is just a matter of practicing and attempting to become better. Because of this class and the practice assignments in the sketchbook, I have become a better artist.

Artist Statement: Strengths and Weaknesses

I see myself as a pretty decent artist. I believe that my main strengths lie within my drawings. In art, the only thing I can actually do is draw. I have been drawing for a couple of years now and I have seen improvement in my drawings over the years. When I draw I don’t always feel satisfied with my drawings, but when people say it’s good, then I know that it isn’t too bad. I have learned to see that my drawings aren’t too bad and so that’s why it is my strength. Drawing is my strength. The main type of drawings I usually do are anime and cartoon drawings because they aren’t too hard. Also I am not very good in other areas of art.

To be more specific, i’m really bad at painting. Whether it is acrylic or watercolor painting, the paintings I do are not good. Another one of my weaknesses is optical illusion drawings. I have tried several times to create illusions on a paper, but the results were that it still looked too flat with no highlights that stood out. One of my other weaknesses is drawing real people. I have tried that like only twice, but the results weren’t very good. The drawings didn’t look real enough and were missing many facial and skin details.Basically my weaknesses are any other types of mediums except drawing.

I have several goals I want to accomplish as an artist. One of the main ones is drawing realistic people because I have seen that i’m not very good at it, and I would like to improve. Another goal I have is to be able to draw optical illusions, which is one of my favorite types of drawings. One of my goals would be painting, but since i’m better at drawing I think I should focus more on that and try to enhance my drawing skills.

There are several brick walls stopping me from reaching my goals. One of the most important ones is time. The lack of time has been a brick wall because without time I can't practice and try to get better. Another brick wall is the effort I put in a drawing. If I think that it'll turn out bad, I don't put much effort on it because I know how it will turn out. When I think a drawing will turn out good, I tend to focus more and putting in more effort.

Pig Skull

A subtractive eraser drawing of a pig skull. Charcoal background made first and then erased to make skull. The details were made by manipulating the values of the charcoal and controlling the erasing. Several erasers and charcoals used to make the drawing. Light source was provided. The drawing was a direct observation drawing.

Window Drawing

My first draft of a window. Drawing made completely in pencils of different values. It is mainly the frame of a window.

Glass Cup

My drawing of a glass cup for the Glass Cup Project. Drawn entirely in blue color pencils. It was an attempt to drawing a realistic action of pouring water on to a clear glass cup.
